Arlette Miller-Smith Appointed Dean of Multicultural Affairs and Diversity Programs at St. John Fisher College

October 23, 2002-St. John Fisher College has appointed Arlette Miller-Smith to the newly-created position of Dean of the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Diversity Programs, reporting to the Provost of the College.

Miller-Smith came to Fisher in 1998 with a dual appointment as an Assistant Professor of English and Associate Dean for Diversity Programs. Her new role as Dean recognizes the importance Fisher places on diversity and multiculturalism.

"Arlette's new role recognizes her outstanding contribution to the College, as well as the key role that diversity initiatives play in Fisher's long-term strategy," said Dr. Donald Bain, Provost and Dean of the College, in a memo to faculty and staff.

Her responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: assisting in the recruitment and retention of faculty, staff, and students from underrepresented groups; developing programs to address the needs of students from different backgrounds and identities; participating in curriculum development in the areas of diversity and multiculturalism; and fostering initiatives that promote civility, understanding, and a respectful campus environment.
