Dr. Arlette Miller Smith Earns Doctorate

Dr. Arlette Miller Smith, Dean of Multicultural Affairs and Diversity Programs, for St. John Fisher College successfully defended her doctoral dissertation at the University at Buffalo (The State University of New York) on Wednesday, April 27, 2005.

Dr. Miller Smith's degree is in American Studies (Women's Studies) with an emphasis on nineteenth-century African American women's issues. Her dissertation, Speaking the Song, Spreading the Word, Lifting the People: The Reimagination of Community Through Vocal Activism, examines the development, transmittal, and reimagination of community as a form of resistance in African American women's vocal tradition.

Completing the doctorate has been a truly outstanding accomplishment for Arlette, who has continued to serve St. John Fisher College most ably while finishing her degree.
