Advocacy Center Offers Speakers' Bureau
The Advocacy Center, a nonprofit agency serving individuals with disabilities, their families and circles of support, has developed a speakers’ bureau. The goal of the speakers’ bureau is to promote disability awareness in Monroe County. Speakers are available to share their personal and family perspectives on disabilities.
Sixteen parents of children with disabilities recently participated in a two-day conference at The Advocacy Center called “Parents as Presenters.” Participants learned skills needed to create and deliver a presentation using life stories to increase awareness of disability issues. These sixteen parents are now members of the speakers’ bureau at The Advocacy Center.
Some of the topics addressed by the speakers include:
- Communicating with someone who has a disability. People First Language and Disability Etiquette.
- Introductions to disabilities including: Autism, Attention Deficit Disorder, Brain Injury, Down’s Syndrome, Deafness and Hearing Loss.
- Breaking down barriers facing people with disabilities.
- Parent/Professional collaboration - tips on how to improve relationships between parents of children with disabilities and educators.
- Disability awareness for employers - how disability is part of your diverse work force.
- Personal Perspectives on Disabilities.
Presentations are free in Monroe County to employers, community groups, colleges, schools, and other groups. For more information or to request a presentation, please contact Colleen Brown at 585-546-1700 or by email at Brown@advocacycenter.com. |
