Director Participates in NY State Board of Regents Meeting
The
State Board of Regents convened leaders from education,
business, and community services to confront the gaps
in education and devise powerful ideas to eliminate them. Mike Streeter,
Executive Director of the Greater Rochester Diversity
Council was invited to participate in one of seven regional
conversations being held across the state.
The
Regents reported that New York faces a tremendous educational
challenge. "We must close the achievement gaps
that exist (early childhood through postsecondary
education) along the lines of income, race and ethnicity,
aging, and disability. And we must do this while raising
the performance of the entire system to the level needed
to sustain the state's economy in the face of global
competition. There has been progress over the last decade,
yet the gaps in achievement and productivity persist
and impact New York's economic and civic vitality."
The
results of the regional meetings will form the agenda
for a November 2005 Summit of the University of the
State of New York (USNY). At the Summit, statewide leaders
will commit to carrying forward on the few best ideas.
