Aetna Receives Latina Style 50 Award
For the seventh straight year, Aetna has been named by Latina Style magazine as one of the 50 companies providing the best professional opportunities for Latina women in the United States. The award ceremony took place Feb. 3 in Washington, D.C. Representing Aetna were Gaudalupe Mares, customer service manager in the Precertification department in San Ramon, Calif., and Constanza Paramo, a human resources business partner in Aetna Information Services, Middletown, Conn.
"I was extremely honored to attend the ceremony and to humbly represent the company's Latina employees," said Mares. "The Latina Style award was yet another testament to how Aetna remains true to its value of diversity in the workplace and how the community sees and appreciates this fact. It shows how Aetna is sincere in 'leading people to success' by 'doing the right thing for the right reason.'" Paramo added, "It was an incredible opportunity to network and hear some terrific Latinas doing some great work. This kind of event feeds your soul."
The program included a diversity conference that attracted Hispanic community leaders, chief diversity executives, Latina entrepreneurs, government decision-makers and other national experts on diversity in the workforce. Aetna was a corporate sponsor. Steven Sanger, chairman and chief executive officer of General Mills, was the keynote speaker. The ceremony was followed by a reception at the White House.
More than 600 corporations were included in the annual search, which recognized 50 companies. Each was evaluated based on the number of its Latina executives and board members, as well as mentoring programs, educational opportunities, alternative work policies, dependent/child care support, employee benefits, and other issues that Latina Style readers identified as most important to them in the workplace.
Hispanics are the fastest-growing population in the United States. Hispanic women in the U.S workforce exceed 5 million and their numbers are rising. The companies listed in the 2004 Latina Style 50 employ 166,000 Latinas, which represents 5.6 percent of the total workforce of all the selected companies.
