Women United Promotes Wellness
Health Fair Offered Free Screenings and Information on Community Health Issues
Saturday morning, April 24, from 9 a.m. to noon, men and women of all ages were encouraged to take charge of their health by stopping by the Rochester Public Market at 280 N. Union Street for the Women United Health Fair.

At this event, sponsored by Aetna, Pfizer, The Nurse Practitioner Association - Greater Rochester Chapter, and Rochester Clinical Research, free wellness screenings and health information were offered by a variety of health care professionals and organizations.

Free screenings offered included: BMI (body mass index) to check for obesity, Heel scan for bone density and osteoporosis, Blood pressure checks for hypertension, and AIDS testing.

In addition, free literature and, in some cases, consultation will be available for the following health topics and concerns: Women's heart disease, Diabetes, Kidney disease, Lead poisoning, Pediatric mental health, Sickle cell, Sexually transmitted diseases, Fitness Hepatitis, Asthma/Smoking, Vision, Cancer, Medical care for the uninsured, and WIC (Women, Infants, and Children program).

Organizations participating in the Health Fair included Rochester Clinical Research, Rheumatology Associates, Nurse Practitioners Association, ABVI, Unity Health Systems, WIC, AIDS Rochester, Unity Health Cardiology, Soul Sisters Fitness, St. Joseph's Neighborhood Center, and Pediatric Nurse Practitioners.

The Women United Health Fair is a community outreach project of Women United, which engages enterprising women of all ages and backgrounds, who want to demonstrate their leadership in charitable efforts, make a real difference, and have a fun, rewarding experience. Women are encouraged to participate in Women United by volunteering their time and/or attending an event. Interested women may contact Jodi Groden at United Way, at 242-6418.

Upcoming Women United fundraising events include a celebrity art show and auction, a women-themed trivia contest, a designer/florist exhibition, and a golf outing.
