Children Participate in Take Your Child To Work Day
at Bausch & Lomb
Bausch
& Lomb hosted about 220 children of employees in Rochester
for the annual Take Your Child to Work day.
It
is the largest group of employees' children ever to participate
in the event, which was held at the Optics Center.
Members
of our Women-In-Leadership Forum, led by Anne Zavertnik,
and representatives from Human Resources organized and
managed the event. In recognition of our 150th anniversary,
the day's theme was "Yesterday's Innovation, Today's
Vision, Tomorrow's Future." The goal was to highlight
our rich heritage of innovation and demonstrate our
commitment to future success in order to help employees'
children learn more about what we do and pique their
interest in future careers with us.
The
children, ages 9 to 15, started the day with their parents
at a continental breakfast in the company's dining center,
and then rotated in groups through four workshops staffed
by our employees. The workshops included a trip to the
Microbiology and Analytical Chemistry
labs where they learned about good and bad bacteria,
viewed highly magnified bacteria colonies under our
light microscopes and discovered the importance of sterility
measures and sterility testing for our medical products.
Another workshop focused on marketing and advertising,
showcasing the various ways we communicate the benefits
of our products to teen consumers. A third workshop
highlighted our 150-year history by showing a 15-minute
film of our company's history and providing "hands-on"
historic artifacts. Finally, a workshop, designed similar
to the TV game show "Family Feud," had teams
compete to answer questions about our facility, our
products and the company.
The
afternoon provided time for children to shadow their
parents on the job to demonstrate "real work"
situations and to help children gain a fuller understanding
of their parents' daily work experience.
