MCC
Launches New Diversity Council
A
new diversity council at Monroe Community College is
expected to enhance diversity in hiring, retention and
professional development. Earlier in the spring semester,
MCC merged its affirmative action committee and a diversity
interest group to form the new diversity council.
"The
merger allows for a collaborative effort of faculty and
staff working with the affirmative action officer and
administration to support diversity efforts," says
Alberta Lee, associate director, Human Resources and chair
of the diversity council. Diversity at the college already
received a big boost through an internal grant and subsequent
budgeted funds for recruitment. "The funding allows
Human Resources and other departments to try different
things in our recruitment," says Lee. For example,
MCC could reach a different pool of applicants by attending
targeted conferences and placing ads in specific publications.
An
extension of the Dr. Alice Holloway Young Teaching Internships
now allows academic departments to request that interns
be hired into full-time positions when position openings
exist and department evaluations are favorable. The
racially-diverse interns serve as adjuncts with mentor
support from experienced faculty. "This change
speaks to the importance of retention," says Lee.
The
new diversity council met recently and is discussing
professional development programs. Watch for details
in the coming months.
