Presents Expressions of Diversity Conference
March 29 - April 3
Rochester
Institute of Technology's Commission for Promoting Pluralism
presents Expressions of Diversity Conference, March
29-April 3, 2004. Many programs are scheduled throughout
the week and all will take place on the RIT campus.
Programs are free of charge and require registration
for groups of 10 or more. Interpreting Services are
available upon request and availability.
The

The conference theme is "Expressions from Within"
encompassing three areas: Artistic Expressions of Diversity
(Art, Music, Dance, Culinary Arts, Theatre, Poetry),
Academic Workshops about Diversity, and Cultural, Ethnic
and Religious Awareness.
Four
highlights of the week are: Monday, March 29, 2004 at
11:00 a.m., Ingle Auditorium, Eulas Boyd, RIT Assistant
Provost for Diversity will open our conference with
a keynote address titled: "Diversity at RIT".
Spiritus Christi Gospel Choir will grace us with inspirational
music on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 in Ingle Auditorium
at 6:15 p.m.
On
Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. Ingle Auditorium
Guest Speaker Dr. Claude Steel from Stanford University
will present "Enabling diversity: How to construct
identity safety in the face of identity threat".
This presentation is based upon fifteen years of research
to identify unseen pressures affecting the academic
performance of certain groups, groups whose abilities
are negatively stereotyped in important areas such as
women in math and minorities in most academic fields.
In addition, new research will be discussed that describes
in detail these stereotypical threats that come with
group identity.
AThe
end of the week brings Rochester's Bush Mango Drum &
Dance "Connecting Us All" with Thomas Warfield's
RIT Dance Troop. Bush Mango Drum & Dance is a multi-racial,
multi-generational company performing traditional music
and dance from Guinea, West Africa. They will be performing
on Friday, April 2, 2004 at 7:30 p.m. Ingle Auditorium.
