Fair September 20 to Address Needs of Local African-Americans
The Greater Rochester NAACP, the Faith Community Alliance
and Excellus BlueCross BlueShield (Excellus BCBS) are
planning a community health fair, in response to a recently
released study indicating that African-Americans in
Rochester are at an increased risk to die from several
diseases that are treatable if caught early.
The
free event will be held Saturday, September 20, from
10 a.m. - 4 p.m. in the large outdoor parking lot at
the Unity Health System Genesee St. Campus. Major co-sponsors
include Unity Health System, the American Cancer Society,
the National Kidney Foundation of Upstate New York and
the Rochester Primary Care Network.
"We've
recruited many community partners who will provide free
health screenings and education targeted to the areas
of greatest concern for African-Americans," said
Rev. Norvel Goff, president of the NAACP and chair of
the Faith Community Alliance. "In addition, we've
asked our spiritual partners from the Faith Community
Alliance to urge their parishioners to attend. We plan
to focus on the needs of the African-American community;
however everyone is welcome to join us at this event."
This
health fair will focus on interventions for people who
are ill or at risk of developing an illness. There will
be a range of screening activities and disease risk
assessments.
At
the event, entertainment will be provided by church
choirs, step teams and there will be plenty of music.
Soul Fitness Aerobics will offer exercise demonstrations.
"This
event will be a celebration of our rich and vibrant
culture," said Rev. Goff. "We are planning
an event that will appeal to adults, to families with
children and to seniors."
The
health fair will also include free food, giveaways and
activities for kids. For more information on the event,
please call (585) 473-2440.
