Session Description
This limited seating, special registration session will feature a roundtable discussion in the Phil Donahue show style.  The audience will be invited to ask questions and provide comments.  The roundtable speakers will explore the most challenging diversity issues facing universities and colleges and the implications for employers.  They will discuss the diversity strategies currently underway to address these issues.  Other issues discussed will include the economy and its effect on university diversity efforts, including efforts to create greater access to higher education among underrepresented groups.

Roosevelt Thomas, Jr., Founder of the American Institute for Managing Diversity and CEO of Roosevelt Thomas Consulting and Training, often referred to as the “Father of the Field of Diversity”, author of 7 books including “Beyond Race and Gender” and “Building on the Promise of Diversity”, one of the most frequently referenced diversity experts in the world.
 
Ted Childs, retired Global Chief Diversity Officer of IBM, and distinguished International Diversity Expert and Speaker, featured in a number of Harvard Business Review articles on diversity and Founder of Ted Childs, LLC.

Session Description
This session is a moderated panel discussion that will focus on the implications of the election of a bi-racial and bi-ethnic president, Barack Obama, and the possible opportunities for the U.S. and the world.  The moderator and panelists will explore such questions as:

  • What is the meaning of the phrase “post-racial America”?  
  • Does the election of an African American President signal the beginning of a new civil rights era?
  • What impact does the election of an African American President have on diversity and diversity management in a global society?  
  • What major population shifts and global demographics may contribute to the need for a new diversity and civil rights dialogue?  What is or what will be the new dialogue?
  • Does the election of an African American President signal the beginning or end of the diversity dialogue in corporate America, academe, etc…?
  • What are the unfinished diversity management and civil rights issues?
  • What is your response to those who say that the election of an African American President obviates the need for dialogue about diversity and diversity management in the USA?

  • What are the new economic and demographic realities that will most affect leaders and businesses in the next 2 to 5 years?
  • What are the best opportunities and most challenging problems for organizations in the new economic environment?
  • How do diversity champions remain relevant in the new environment? What is or will be the critical diversity management work for this new economic environment?
