GAGV Announces New Executive Director

Tom Ferrarese, President of the Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley (GAGV), announced that Susan A. Cowell will be the new Executive Director of the agency.

Professionally, Sue is a master’s degree Nurse Practitioner who spent 18 years working in management positions at the University of Rochester Health Service and the Monroe County Health Department. In addition to acquiring operational experience, she was responsible for the planning and implementation of the HIV/STD Prevention Training Center at the U of R – one of four such centers in the nation.

Most recently Sue has been the owner/operator of a small service business where she has to manage employees, control expenses and provide good customer service. She brings strong management skills to the Executive Director position.

In addition to her professional work, Sue has made major contributions to the community through her volunteer work. She has served in leadership positions on the GAGV and Empire State Pride Agenda Boards and Sue was a founding member of AIDS Rochester, Inc. and a founding board member of the Men of Color Health Awareness (MOCHA) Project.

Matt Foreman, keynote speaker at the recent GAGV Equality and Leadership Conference, was the Executive Director of Empire State Pride Agenda when Sue was Co-Chair of the Board. He called Sue a “treasure” and said that she will give the Executive Director job her all. “Sue has demonstrated success in social services programs, supervision of staff and board/staff relations. She also has a long history of dedication to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered community in Rochester.”
