VA Medical Center Recognized as Diversity Leader
by American Hospital Association

Washington, DCThe Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Washington, DC (DCVAMC) has been honored by the Institute for Diversity in Health Management, an affiliate of the American Hospital Association, for its diversity management programs and initiatives.

A survey, sponsored by the Institute for Diversity, concluded that DCVAMC was among the top 10 hospitals in the country.  Results of “The State of Health Care Diversity and Disparities: A Benchmark Study of U.S. Hospitals” were released at the 2010 National Leadership and Educational Conference on June 10, 2010, in Chicago, IL.

The survey assessed internal diversity programs in hospitals. DCVAMC was ranked “Best in Class” in three categories: expanding the diversity of the organization’s governance body and leadership team; strengthening a diverse workforce throughout the organization; and delivering culturally and linguistically competent patient care throughout the organization.  The Medical Center received a “Promising Practice” in the benchmark; effectively engaging the diverse community the organization serves.

“With over 21 different nationalities represented among our Medical Center staff,” said Fernando O. Rivera, Medical Center Director, “and scores of disabled employees, the Flagship of VA Health Care has made a commitment to employing outstanding practices in the area of diversity and inclusion. We are proud of our diversity and the respect and appreciation we have for one another.  It is important if we are to be a cohesive team providing excellent care in a challenging health care environment. We believe our diversity makes us strong and helps us to be more aware of the unique, individual needs of the Veterans we serve.”
