Encourage Students to Enter Freedom Heroes Book Contest


(Rochester, NY )…The Sisters of Saint Joseph and 13WHAM TV are sponsoring a city-wide student book writing contest. The contest, which is also supported by Mayor Bob Duffy, County Executive Maggie Brooks and Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, is open to all city school students and students attending other schools or home school who live in the city and who attend grades 4-12.

Students will write a biography about Susan B. Anthony or Frederick Douglass. Information about Ms. Anthony and Mr. Douglass is offered on the contest Web site or will be mailed to students.

Teachers are encouraged to tell students about the contest. The winning book entries will be presented at The Frederick Douglass Underground Railroad Conference in September at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. The books may also be published and prizes will be awarded including free admission to the National Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.
