Three Young Persons Awarded Scholarships from the YMCA of Greater Rochester

YMCA of Greater Rochester Scholarship for the Enhancement of Diversity

Our YMCA Scholarship for the Enhancement of Diversity allows us to cultivate outstanding minority youth and assist them with their college expenses. We’re lucky to have TWO recipients of this year’s scholarship, and it gives me great pleasure to introduce Mr. David Dunwoody and Mr. Jordan Rivera.

David is a senior at Eastridge High School, and plans to attend Monroe Community College in the fall to pursue a degree in engineering. He is very active in sports, particularly basketball and track & field. David is also deeply immersed in the community, spending time volunteering for organizations like Habitat for Humanity, Foodlink, and Project Ready. His teachers and coaches describe him as a respectful, hardworking young man who has a wonderful personality and incredible work ethic.

Jordan is a senior at McQuaid Jesuit High School, and plans to attend Bucknell University in the fall. He is the captain of the McQuaid Crew Team, as well as a Varsity Wrestler. He is also a member of the McQuaid Junior Engineering Technical Society. In addition to his athletic and academic hobbies, Jordan is an active community volunteer.

He has helped out with various projects for organizations such as the Open Door Mission, St. Anne’s Nursing Home, and even tutors at-risk students. Jordan is also actively involved with his parish, St. John’s of Rochester. He truly embraces the Christian values of the YMCA, and would like to continue to serve as a lifeguard and swim instructor after high school. His teachers and coaches describe her as an outstanding young man who always puts helping others at the top of his list.

Springfield College Matching Scholarship Program
Since 1885, Springfield College has had a unique relationship with the YMCA movement, playing an important role in preparing YMCA leaders.

Through this partnership, Springfield College will match local YMCAs’ tuition assistance, helping to assist in the recruitment and retention of current and future YMCA staff.

We’re pleased to present this year’s Matching Scholarship to Springfield College to Ashley Ryan, from the Eastside Family Branch.

Ashley has been active with the Eastside YMCA since it opened in October of 2006. Because she was only 14 at the time, and not yet old enough to become certified as a lifeguard, she began volunteering as a swim instructor aide. Then, after hundreds of volunteer hours, she was finally able to begin a part-time job as a lifeguard.

Ashley is a strong advocate for the YMCA mission, and is extremely passionate about forming strong relationships with members and staff. The YMCA has had a large impact on her life, and she uses the positive experiences she’s had to help her build stronger bonds with those around her.

Ashley has a great passion for YMCA work, which will no doubt be fueled further upon attending Springfield College. She plans on returning to the Eastside branch during school breaks to continue her work as a lifeguard.
