Curtis Birthwright, the Project's Coordinator, says, "The project seeks to reach children early to educate them on their cultural heritage and also make this heritage part of school curriculums."

The first project students will undertake is The Summer of Opportunity, which invites students and families to explore the sites, sounds, people and stories that have been associated with the Underground Railroad experience.

Students' literacy challenge is to read the book, Freedom Crossing by Margaret Goff Clark before Spetember 16. Students are being asked to keep a response Journal to record Summer of Opportunity experiences.

Students who complete the project will be honored at the Frederick Douglass International Underground Railroad Conference Friday September 29 at 2 p.m. at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center.
