What are your areas of interest and expertise related to workforce diversity?
- Interests: Comprehensive and systemic approaches to organizational cultural competence; Influences of culture of origin on individual and societal cultural competence; Organizational teambuilding; Disparities of health care along racial, class, and ethnic lines.
- Background: Coach for the City of Rochester’s Bi-racial Partnerships Program; Developer and facilitator of cultural competence and diversity trainings for programs of the Bronx Teen Pregnancy Network, the Center for Dispute Settlement, Rochester General Hospital, Hunter College, and the University of Rochester over the past 20+ years.
What projects are you focusing on within your organization to advance the understanding of diversity in the workplace?
The RGHS Cultural Competency Committee and the Department of People Resources are developing initiatives to provide a culturally competent environment for all RGHS patients and employees.
What initiatives are you working on outside of your organization to advance the understanding of diversity?
As a member of the Black Women’s Leadership Forum, I participate in the development and facilitation of workshops on internalized racism for black women in the Rochester area.
As a trainee in the Marriage and Family Therapy Program of the University of Rochester, my master’s project includes:
- A review of the literature related to advances in cultural competence initiatives within organizations.
- A documentation of the central components of a cultural competency training that addresses the impact of culture of origin on ones beliefs and behaviors related to difference, and that lays the foundation for mutual understanding.
How do you expect membership in the WDN to benefit your organization?
Patient service and employee satisfaction are top priorities for RGHS. The greater our cultural competence, the better we will meet the needs of our patients and employees. Membership in the WDN will allow RGHS to learn from the experiences of other member agencies, benefit from the information provided during meeting presentations, and utilize the expertise of the WDN leadership.
